I think I found a typo on お金の話. It’s in the last sentence お金のことを中心した経済学ちいう学問もあるということです。 ちいう should probably be という. The source is listed as Shin Kokugo, so just out of curiosity, what grade is it from?

Hey, thanks for pointing that out. It is a typo, a couple articles were taken from books so I had to type the whole thing hehe. It doesn’t say what grade though. But its from 新编日语3, dunno if you know that series? It’s not the most challenging article but I think it might be too much for N3 I suppose. What do you think? (am working on adding more challenging articles)

      *uploaded the article sans typo

Well, to be honest, I’ve found most of the N2 articles to be fairly easy. I do occasionally need to check the vocabulary list, but I grabbed the four I hadn’t read before, and read them all in less than half an hour, on my way to class. Maybe it’d be good to ask someone preparing for N3, and a couple of N2 people what they think? That way you could figure out where the dividing line between the two levels should be drawn.

Yea, thats the thing, L2 (now N2) used to cover quite a range stepping up from L3 (now N4). N3 now is a bit of a grey area for me since I personally can’t quite place it. But thanks for the feedback, working on it. Maybe you could try the N1 articles (trust me, they’re N1 worthy).

EDIT: following articles moved to N3 level
    – 人類最初の文字 – 楔形文字 (article no. 0003)
    – お金の話 (article no. 0011)
    – 浦島太郎 (article no. 0007)

All you N2 level-ish out there, what do you think of the N2 article difficulty? Too easy? Too difficult? Just fine? Feedback please〜!:)

Don’t know if you changed them since this post was made but I would say they are not that easy.

I am skipping N3 and going for N2 sometime in the distant future. The N2 articles are definitely something I need to sit down and study for a while. N3 I can understand except for 10-20% of the kanji.

Your articles are a god send. I don’t know what I am going to do when I finish them. You should write a book!

Hi James! Thanks for visiting! Glad the articles are helpful. I’ll remember that about that book haha 😀

The N2 articles are definitely not too easy! There is a lot of N1 vocabulary and kanji in there. I find them quite hard to get through. I think I’ll come back to them once I’ve studied a bit more.

    Squire Starsquid-san,
Thank you so much for creating this wonderful website. I will definitely tell my students (yes, I am a Japanese teacher) to read from this collection. I have not yet read all of the stories, but just noticed a typo. 「世界で最も強い毒を持ち主」should be 「世界で最も強い毒の持ち主」. Please keep on going and I will keep coming back!

    Thanks for these readings!
The level of kanji and vocab in there articles are sometimes very challenging, but not overwhelming to the extent that I have to give up trying to read the articles.
The one about volcanoes was really interesting too!

(Using Rikai-kun to show the meanings of words by hovering over them doesn’t seem to work with PDFs. Could you provide the option to view the articles as regular webpages rather than only PDFs? It would be very convenient!)

    Thanks again!

I’ve been reading through the articles since I ran out of reading questions for the JLPT to practice with. 😛 I wish these had comprehension questions, but at least it’s a good chance to improve reading skills.

It’s been a while since you put the easy articles back in L3 level, but I think among the remaining articles the ones on Tanabata, volcanoes, and allergies are still a bit easy for the N2 level. The ones on love hotels, poison dart frogs, and the environment are harder.

Of course the main difference is that the reading selections used on the test usually have some kind of authorial opinion you have to parse out, but these are more generally informative.
